Porsche has launched the Macan Turbo Exclusive Performance Edition, replacing the Turbo as the new range-topping Macan SUV, with extra horsepower and £23,000 added to the price. An evolution of the Macan Turbo Performance Package, the Exclusive Performance Edition uses the Turbo’s 3.6-litre twin-turbo V6 engine but output is increased to 436bhp, 36bhp extra than the standard Turbo, as well as 600Nm of torque through its permanent four-wheel-drive system. The 0-62mph sprint takes 4.4 seconds, four tenths quicker than the Turbo, and top speed is 169mph.

The 540C is arguably the unsung hero of the McLaren range, offering all the looks of its more expensive 570S sister model and as much of its performance as you’d ever want to unleash on the road, all for a – relatively – affordable price tag that makes a Porsche 911 Turbo look a bit sick.
With only two seats it’s not quite as practical as the Porsche, and a couple of small flaws in the 540C’s genius include a moment of initial turbo lag and occasional ride comfort compromises. It will probably cost you a bit more to run too, but the McLaren’s supercar style means it’s much more attention-grabbing than a 911 Turbo.

The Renault Koleos is a fitting flagship for the French manufacturer’s SUV/crossover line-up. It’s spacious, comfortable, well-equipped and will carry five people in premium style, along with their luggage. Crisply styled exterior lines are complemented by one of the better-executed Renault interior designs that we can remember and, with part-leather seats and a full panoramic sunroof, there’s a genuinely luxurious ambience. While pleasant to drive, the Koleos can’t match the dynamic ability of some of its sportier rivals, and the ride around town isn’t quite as accomplished as the best on that score either. Renault’s focus on excellent rear passenger space means there’s also more luggage volume in some key rivals.
This has been a big year for the Skoda Octavia. The Czech sister model to the Volkswagen Golf and SEAT Leon won Estate Car of the Year at our 2017 New Car Awards, and it’s also been on the receiving end of a facelift, introducing a minor design refresh, new technology and also new engines.
It’s out with the 1.4-litre TSI four-cylinder petrol, and in with the VW Group’s latest 1.5-litre unit. The 148bhp power figure is the same as before, as is the 250Nm of torque. But performance has increased on paper; the car is now three tenths faster from 0-62mph, taking eight seconds, and the top speed increases slightly to 136mph.

The new Nissan Qashqai-rivalling Grandland X has now taken its place as the staple SUV offering in Vauxhall’s line-up. And with the PSA Peugeot-Citroen takeover of Opel and Vauxhall, the previously planned large SUV appears to be facing an uncertain future.
So, for the time being, if you want a large family car with a raised ride height and a bit of off-road ability from Vauxhall, your sole option will be this: the Insignia Country Tourer. We’re driving it for the first time to see if it makes a viable alternative to full-size SUVs such as the Skoda Kodiaq.
The previous Country Tourer was never a very big seller in the UK, but Vauxhall is keen to give it another go. As well as having a growing glut of SUVs to contend with, the Country Tourer’s closest rivals include the VW Passat Alltrack and Skoda Octavia Scout.

Steve Walker 2017-10-15 18:20 Falling sales of the Vauxhall Astra are being blamed for 400 job losses at Ellesmere Port
Vauxhall’s Ellesmere Port plant will see 400 jobs cut as the British marque’s new owner, PSA Group, moves production of the Vauxhall Astra from two shifts to one early in 2018.
The announcement from PSA, which acquired Vauxhall and its European counterpart Opel from GM for £1.9bn in August 2017, comes as a result of “challenging European market conditions” according to a PSA spokesman.
The Group, which also owns Peugeot, Citroen and DS, also said that manufacturing costs at Ellesmere Port were higher that at other major plants in the group, putting it in line for the job cuts.
Vauxhall employs 4,500 people in the UK as a whole and 1,800 at the Ellesmere Port plant in Cheshire. It is hoped that the majority of the 400 job loses will be voluntary.

We’ve been generous with our praise for the Peugeot 3008 since its launch late last year, with the crossover named best mid-size SUV in this year’s Auto Express Awards. It also took the overall Car of the Year gong from our sister title, Carbuyer. Hot on its heels, and keen to replicate its success, is the platform sharing 5008 SUV, which has now arrived in the UK.
We’ve already spent some time on British roads with a 1.2-litre petrol-powered version, but despite the bad press diesels have had in the past year, oil-burners are still expected to make up the sales volume. Toyota has revealed the third installment of its flagship Century saloon ahead of the car’s debut at the 2017 Tokyo Motor Show. If you aren’t a petrolhead you may be unfamiliar with this luxury Toyota – due to it not being sold in the UK – but to put you in the picture, the two previous Toyota Century models offered big, powerful engines in a ‘V’ configuration, interiors comfier than a room full of pillows and so much legroom Peter Crouch could travel in comfort.
The information released by Toyota suggests that the new Century will infuse up-to-date technology with a classy exterior, similar to that of its predecessors. An example being the 5.0-litre V8 under the bonnet, which has done what any environmentally conscious 5.0-litre engine should, and paired itself with an electric motor to improve fuel economy.

Toyota has revealed the Tj Cruiser, part van, part SUV, possibly the world’s first purpose built SUVan? Who knows, but what we do know is it will be debuting as a concept at Tokyo Motor Show later this month, alongside the new Century luxury saloon and GR HV Sports concept.
The angular design, as seen in the images, suggests from the get-go that this is a practical vehicle. The concept has a bonnet, roof and wheel arches which have been designed to resist scratches, dirt and accidental impacts from objects – similar in principle to the padding on the Citroen C4 Cactus.
